Surface Tension

Surface Tension is a two-minute video projection that weaves together filmed water surfaces into a fluid visual tapestry. Projected across Lady Bird Lake as part of Austin’s annual WaterWork event, Surface Tension transforms the structure into a temporary vessel for reflection, connecting local landscapes to the elemental power of water.

By isolating details of water and reassembling them into rhythmic groupings, the piece invites viewers to slow down and observe the diversity of water’s movements, from gentle ripples to layered turbulence. Paired with an ambient melodic house track (“Flying Dreams” from One U), these shifting vignettes evoke the beauty of the surrounding nature that is the pulse of this vibrant city.

WaterWork is a unique, immersive art experience that celebrates the dynamic relationship between Austin’s urban landscape and its cherished natural environment. Presented by Design Austin and The Trail Conservancy, this two-night event transforms the iconic façade of Austin’s historic Seaholm Intake Facility into a vibrant canvas of art, light, and motion.

Using state-of-the-art projection mapping technology, the Seaholm Waterfront will come alive with captivating artworks from fifteen talented Austin artists.  Each artist’s work explores and illuminates the vibrant coexistence between Austin’s bustling cityscape and its restorative beauty of natural spaces.
